Our history

In 2002, Amaro celebrated its 30-year anniversary. This family-owned business from Quebec opened its doors in 1972 and, over the years, grew to become one of the largest bottlers of natural spring water in Quebec. Amaro remains one of the few water companies not owned by a multi-national company. Amaro is successful because it strives to provide consumers with a quality product.

Amaro water flows from a natural spring located in St-Cuthbert, a small village in the Lanaudière region, at the foot of the Laurentians hills. This is the region where the Canadian Shield meets the plains of the St-Laurence river. Mr. Armand Rheault, the original owner, was the first person to draw water from the spring.

In the early 70s, the consumption of bottled water was not a wide-spread habit among the Quebec population and Mr. Rheault made a bold move by opening his business. At the time, he operated an aquaculture business and noticed that the water in which his fish swam was of such exceptional quality that it deserved to be bottled. By playing with his name, he created the AMARO brand.

In 1987, Mr. Rheault decided to retire from the water bottling industry and he sold his business to the Colpron family. At the time, Amaro was producing 200,000 18.9 litre bottles per year. Today, Amaro produces more than 3 million bottles each year. The family-owned business sells its products across Quebec and eastern Ontario and also exports some of its water.

Amaro grew from a small and local business into a major player in the Quebec market of bottled spring water. Amaro operates a bottling plant that uses state-of-the-art technology, including robotic automation.

Today, Amaro employs more than 140 employees and independent distributors who cover most of the large urban areas. In addition to its bottling plant in St-Cuthbert, Amaro serves its customers from its distribution centers located in Montreal, Laval, and St-Hubert.
